Howling at the Moon
Howling at the Moon ~ A Multimedia Invitational Exhibit
March 7 - April 13, 2008
Opening Reception: Friday, March 7, 2008, 6 - 8 PM
Norfolk, VA – The d’ART Center presents Howling at the Moon—a multimedia Invitational Art Exhibition, March 7- April 13, 2008, with a free opening reception Friday, March 7 from 6-8PM. Nationally recognized artist Vicki Bruner, conceptualized and curated this imaginative and intellectually charming exhibit.
"Howling at the Moon" fits the feeling of the show; irreverent and crazy, The artwork draws on the exceptional talents of six innovative, fresh and free thinking mixed media artists from Richmond, DC and North Carolina. "There’s a string to the artists. Everyone is a little to the left, experimental, together the artwork is cohesive," says Bruner.
Bruner initially hinged the show on the artwork of Matt Lively a young nationally recognized artist in Richmond. Lively’s paintings depict a suggestion of implied movement. Not necessarily objects in motion but rather subtle hints of things that have been displaced, like the pyramid of sheep found in latest painting.
Victoria Sexton’s work is transformative; hand building large clay sculptures then using cold finishes—that is, painting on clay, adds a vibrant personality to each sculpture. "I love the rich colors and matte finish of this technique. I can now use colors that were unattainable to me in the past. I think of my work as a three dimensional canvas," says Sexton.
Foust, Richmond artist and long time friend of Vicky Bruner, was asked to share her unique abstract style in the Howling exhibition "Her work is pirky and strange and I just love it." says Bruner. Foust debuts a new body of work, taking the exhibition title literally. Her new artwork is little, album cover size, showcasing her print making talents.
Virginia Beach native now Richmond local, Kate Horne, is a young up and coming artist whose artwork caught the eye of Susan Bernard, d’ART Executive Director. Kate’s works in sculpture, painting and printmaking to create one of a kind mixed media artwork. "Her work is kinetic with infinite imagination providing a new experience for our patrons. Says Bernard.
Sheep Jones brings her artistic vision to life with oil and encaustic painting, also known as hot wax painting, using heated beeswax to which colored pigments are added. Originally from Maine, Sheep is an artist in the Torpedo Factory a resident art studio program that the d’ART Center was modeled after 21 years ago.
Vicki Bruner, once a resident artist at the d’ART Center, rounds out Howling at the Moon exhibiting her whimsical perspective with a new series of paintings featuring off the wall Dancers.
This d’ART Center exhibition should not be missed. Come meet the artists and drink in the creativity at free Howling art reception: Friday, March 7, from 6-8pm.
