Juror's StatementSelecting pieces for the 21st iteration of d'ART Center's regional art exhibition was an intriguing, and challenging task. Left only with the judicious ultimatum of ‘works on paper and of clay,' my overall impressions were limited. One observation was nonetheless resounding, an incredible diversity of creative expression.
Two of the oldest mediums know to art production have been exquisitely re-examined, and re-explored in this exhibit. It is encouraging to view works that often approach ancient materials in new configurations.
Despite our lives' constant bombardment with technology's smooth and shallow screens, it's a joy to view work that is very much tactile.
Indeed, these works frequently invite a closer relationship. Dense and layered surface treatments suggest histories both known and mysterious, while delicate mark making on elegant supports offer sublime tranquility.
Regardless of handling, investigation with each work is rewarded. Pieces chosen capture my fancy in a number of ways, though emotive associations and technical versatility are the most prevalent.
The resulting exhibition offers abundant excellence in breadth, and I'm delighted to see such work produced in the Mid-Atlantic.
