Lakaye Mbah - Resident Artist - Studio #7 - Stained glass, Textiles, and Photography

"My artwork associates Black women with nature to foster a healthy self-concept and sense of identity within the Black community. When they take pride in their natural traits and heritage, the entire community benefits.

Through stained glass, textiles, and photography, my work incorporates Igbo cosmology and cultural themes. My textile pieces were inspired by Faith Ringgold’s story quilts. They feature vibrant fabrics and incorporate West African symbols. The stained glass pieces illustrate the African-American experience and our shared humanity. Besides Ringgold, the collection is informed by artists such as Elizabeth Catlett, Aaron Douglas and several artists from the Art Nouveau movement."
