Melissa Schappell – Associate Artist - Mixed Media Collage

Mixed Media: Collage, gouache, watercolor, pen and ink, graphite, charcoal, colored pencil

Melissa Schappell was raised in the suburbs of Philadelphia and in 2007 she attended Kutztown University of Pennsylvania where she studied a dual degree of Fine Art and Art Education with a concentration in Drawing. Drawing as a concentration gave her flexibility to work with a variety of media and formats, which suited her natural inclination to work with mixed media in non-traditional ways. It was here that her focus began to narrow in on the series that she continues to develop and re-imagine involving fears, obsessions, compulsions, and stress triggers. All of her work is inspired on some level by her own experiences with an anxiety disorder and the fine line she regularly maintains between control and chaos. After graduating in 2012 she received an offer to teach at the Visual and Performing Arts Academy of Salem High School in Virginia Beach, Virginia. She continues to educate these gifted students while working on her own craft and developing her series as it evolves alongside her life experiences.
