After teaching literature and women’s studies at universities for 38 years, mostly at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, NANCY TOPPING BAZIN returned to an earlier love of art. She created paintings that are often described as unique, intuitive, happy, fun, and, most of all, whimsical. She has had solo exhibits of her series of “whimsical birds,” for example, at the Norfolk Botanical Garden, The Artists Gallery, the Central Library of Virginia Beach, the Coastal Virginia Unitarian Universalists, and For Arts Sake Gallery in Henrico, VA. In 2018, at the Gloucester Arts Festival exhibit, Jeff Harrison (Curator Emeritus of the Chrysler Museum) said that the “whimsical realm” she creates is “a charmed place of pure imagination that offers hours of joyful contemplation.”
In addition to her birds, however, she painted many different subjects in many different styles. Because she moved to an apartment, she had to downsize; and one hundred of these works are now “on sale” at very reasonable prices. Forty of her favorite paintings are no longer for sale and will remain in her personal collection.
