Ruth Azen Johndrow - Mixed Media
Primarily self-taught, I expressed my creativity from an early age beginning with story writing, quilting and jewelry making. My background in textile arts was the foundation on which I developed an eye for shape, color, pattern and composition. My personal metamorphosis began in 2015 using Zentangle (creating images using pen and ink to draw structured patterns) as a first step in creating free-form two-dimensional works. My compositions progressed by adding color and experimenting with a wide variety of ink, pens, paint and textures.
Before moving to Chesapeake, I immersed myself in practice and study with artists in the Boston area and became a Certified ZentangleTM Teacher in 2017. My study has continued with artists in Virginia Beach as well as online. I have had my work juried into art shows in Massachusetts and Virginia Beach.
Every piece I create is an expression of my soul, longing to connect with those who view my work. My art is spontaneous and intuitive, composed of colors and shapes that simply “feel right.” I gather inspiration from my surroundings, whether it is the backlit magic of the setting sun through the trees, a playful pattern of flowers in the garden, or the detail of architecture in the buildings around me.
